The general purpose of this work is for the education of the Mid-West Tool Collectors Association members.  Many tool collectors have specific types of tools they have interest in.  Unique characteristics can certainly help identify a maker, but in all reality the blacksmith's hand stamp is the only sure bet, and even then it can be subject to debate!

In the region of SE PA, Lancaster and Berks County have perhaps the most blacksmiths who signed their tools.
